Vancouver 27th and 28th Sept.2006

27th. We drove through Downtown Vancouver to Stanley Park which is a little like Kings Park in Perth in as much as it's right next to the city of Vancouver. It has natural forrest still remaining in it and I found it very lovely. Also there are great views of the harbour. Sea-planes were taking off one after the other. They are a common form of transport here with a lot of the rich having their own planes. Jackie and Graham told me I would see Racoons and Skunks there.......but guess what.........they heard I was coming so they headed out of town !! Never saw one !!
From there we went to the Falls Creek area where the 1986 Expo was held. The land has now been filled with very high rise apartments. Hundreds of them, and mostly with good views of the harbour, which means they are highly priced. Then we drove up around Shaunessy where the "Old Money" is. It would be Vancouver's Dalkieth ! The only difference being, the houses are mainly built with timber, not brick. There doesn't seem to be the problem here with Termites that Perth has.
We had dinner at a small restraunt called "Columbus". I had a couple of beers, a nice piece of Sole fish with roast spuds and salad and then went home and slept for 8 hours straight !!
Thursday 28th Sept. 2006
Left home today around Mid-day and travelled East on High-way one through Surrey to Fort Langley. An old historic site where the first Settlers from the Hudson Trading Company settled and traded with the Native Indians. It was all very interesting and we spent 2 1/2 hours there. We then travelled on towards the Canada and USA border where we drove along 0 Ave. between Aldergrove and Abbotsford which separates the two countries. On our right was USA and on our left was Canada. We were allowed to travel at 60 kilometers per hour and the road running paralell on the US side was allowed to travel at 60 miles per hour ?? Seemed strange to me !
We had dinner at Tim Hortons and I tasted my first "Iced Capp ". Very nice. We had a good view of Mt. Baker in Washington State from Tim Hortons so I took a picture of it. NO snow, just a glacier. We travelled home in the fading light and arrived home at 7.30pm.
I was most annoyed because while at Fort Langley I lost my little Photo doover that I was going to put in and have developed. It had 20 photos on it.Damn, damn, damn !! So not only have I lost my photos, but I've lost my Fuji doover as well . And on that note I'm going to bed !!

Vancouver 26th Sept. 2006

A sad day today, Jackie and Graham's friend died this morning. I haven't seen them today. They were gone before I even got out of bed. So it will be a quiet day for me. I need the rest anyway. I feel I have been on the go ever since I left Perth. If I could Air-lift myself out of Vancouver to Birr in Ontario I would, I hate to intrude when people are grieving, but that's just not possible, so I will just stay out of the way as much as I can.
Sorry there's no exciting news, will continue when I have some.

Vancouver Monday 25th 2006

Went to visit Jackie and Graham's friends today. Lorrie and Earl by name. They have sold their home and are moving into a Town House at the end of October. The Townhouse is in the Surrey area of Vancouver, so off we went to have a look at it. I would hate to live in it myself, there are 3 floors !! Just the thing when you start to get older........stairs !! But it had other features.............like 4 toilets !! Just what the ordinary "Older Couple " need. We had plenty of laughs though and I got to go over the Alex Fraser Bridge again. That's the great big one that fascinates me. Graham now calls it "Thelma's Bridge".
The weather is still good, nice and sunny but I think rain is forecast at the end of the week.
Not much to write about tonight, hope all are well, bye now.

Vancouver Saturday 23rd Sept. 2006

Jackie spent most of today with her terminally ill friend, so Graham took me for a drive to Granville Island where there are markets. Arty type markets !! It was very crowded and as I could see no purpose in walking around, we continued. (I hate Shopping at the best of time) We went along the beaches. Kitsilano,Jericho, and Locarno Beaches to name a few. We also went around the British Columbio University. It is huge and Graham said it covers 12 square miles of land. And as Graham said, " When you only have 5 mins between classes it makes it difficult to be on time for the next class!!" We also drove around the Musquean Reserve. It is an Indian (Feather) Reservation. I found that interesting too. Some of the house were kept in good condition, with flowers etc. in the garden, others were very untidy with old car bodies etc. in the garden. From there we went to pick up Jackie at the Hospital, had dinner at a Restraunt called " White Spot", right next to City Hall and then headed home. All ready for bed.

Vancouver, Sunday 24th Sept.2006

Beautiful day weather-wise here in Vanvouver so Graham and Jackie took me to Horseshoe Bay for lunch.
We travelled over the "Iron Workers Bridge", (named after the 15 Iron workers who lost their lives in the construction of it) through North Vancouver then past the Sea Bus Terminal to West Vancouver. West Vancouver has the highest income per capita in Canada. The Princess of Thailand has a Mansion there on the water-front which is one of her holiday homes she uses in the Ski Season. So you can use your imagination as to what the homes stuck to the side of the mountains look like !!As Jackie said " They need a crane to get them in and out of their homes!! The maid uses a Hummer !!" We followed the lower road along the ocean front to Horseshoe Bay where we sat on the "Patio"at a Fish restrauant called Trolls and Jackie and I did a bit of serious "People-watching".Very interesting folk to watch here, believe me !!??You know the type.......teenage figures and 80 year old face lifted faces !! When there were no interesting people going by we watched a couple of Ferries come and go and ofcourse, the beautiful scenery.
With the mountains and the water there is always beaut. scenery to look at.

Vancouver

Have just been having a look around Vancouver the last few days. Jackie, my hostess, has been busy with some friends of hers who are very ill in Hospital so Graham has been showing me around.
Thursday Helena went to Metro Shopping center and Graham and I just picked up a few groceries. Friday morning Helena went home and after lunch Graham took me around the Western end of the Fraser River. There's a lot of the Industrial area around there, all very interesting. The great high bridges fascinate me the most though. When we drive over them I feel I'm on top of the world!!! I tried to take a photo of the Alex Fraser Bridge but I could'nt do it justice.
Friday Jackie went to the Mormon Church to do her Genealogy work and Graham and I went and picked her up around 8.15pm so I was able to get a night view from the bridge too. Thousand of sparkling lights. What a view !!
Today is a beautiful day weather wise, around 20degs is forecast, so Graham is going to take me around the beach areas. Will tell you about that in my next blog. Bye now. PS: thanks for comment Judy.

Here I am again having a "rest day" for the first time in nearly 2 weeks. I feel I have been on the go non-stop and my head is so full of where I've been and what I've seen it's a wonder I can remember my own name !! Helena has gone wandering around the big shopping center East of where we're staying today, but you know me and shopping, I hate it, and as I don't need anything I am having a break. Will be going to get some grocery shopping with Jackie and Graham when I have brought this blog up to date and that will be my day.Helena and I went to Victoria Island on Tuesday the 19th for an overnight stay. We set off Tuesday morning thinking we would get on the ferry at Tsawwassen at 11am but we were in for a shock when we arrived there at 10.45am and were told that the 11am ferry was full and the next ferry left at 1pm. So we got into line to go on the 1pm ferry. These ferries are h-u-g-e !! All the semi-trailers and buses go on first then the cars go on, rows and rows of them !! Once on the ferry we left the car and went up to the indoor area of the ferry and got ourselves a window seat and admired the view as we made the 2 hour journey over to the Island. For those who are interested in the cost of the return ferry trip,it was $123.20 for 2 people. Not cheap !! Once off the ferry we headed to the Butchart Gardens before we ran out of daylight !! The weather was good the gardens were beautiful and once again, the cost was reasonably high. $23.00 each. But it was worth it. Not a weed in sight and the lawns are beautifully manicured. There must be a high wage bill to keep it that way.It covers 55 acres of land so that gives you some idea of the size of it. By the time we left there it was getting late and we had 1 1/2 hour drive in front of us to get to where we were spending the night with Helena's friends just past Ladysmith.( We always seem to be trying to find our way to places in the dark)Anyway we were made very welcome at Lise and Tony's house and didn't fall into bed until 1.30am !!We left Lise and Tony about 10am and headed back into Victoria City to have a look at the sights along the way. In the rain !!! It rained all day, so we just had to ignore the rain and have a look anyway. Our first stop was a town called Chemainus where there are many murals on the buildings painted by International Artists. It's a very "Arty" town and well worth the look. When we were driving around having a look I heard beautiful pan-pipe music and we found a lone player in the sound-shell playing the most beautiful music. We stood in the rain listening to him and when he stopped we spoke to him and he asked me where I was from. He was from Peru. Anyway, he asked me what type of music I liked and when I told him he played a piece just for me. What a smoothe operator he was, 'cause I naturally bought his CD with that piece of music on it.!! Will continue our Victoria Island adventures tomorrow. Thanks for your comments Judy, and I am surprised to read that I have been to places you haven't been to!!! You will have to catch up when you do your travels next year.

Downtown Vancouver 18th Sept.2006

Here I am again to tell you of my day out today with Helena, Jackie and Graham.
Helena and I were both pretty tired after our day at Whistler and we both slept-in this morning so by the time we all set off it was about 1pm. We walked down and caught the Sky Train which was a new experience for Helena and I, and we had good views of Downtown Vancouver and as I sat next to Graham he was able to tell me what I was looking at.Jackie did the same for Helena. We then walked down River Street in Gastown and looked in the shops. Once again we were caught up with Tourists from a cruise ship which Jackie told us was probably the last cruise to Alaska.
We had a late lunch at "The Old Spaghetti Factory". It has an interesting history. Vancouver was born just 50 yards East of the Spag.Factory. Gastown was named after the notorious saloon keeper, Gassy Jack Deighton. (Poor man probably had a lot of wind!!Just as well they call it gas over here and not F..t!!!!)
We arrived home about 6pm, but no-one was hungry. We were all full of Spaghetti.
Tomorrow Helena and I are going over to Victoria Island on the ferry. We are going to do the touristy thing then go to some friends of Helena's and spend the night.( It's great having friends in all these different places!)
Helena and I worked out our combined expenses this morning for our Rockie Mountain trip and it came to just over $1,100 for the 2 of us. We thought that was reasonable as we didn't worry about costs to much. Helena's car is a Honda Hybrid, and we travelled about 2,000 Kilometers for $130.00. A very economical car. Do we have that type of car in Aust ?
Now I have to go and pack an over-night bag for tomorrow, bye for now. By the way Jude,it was good to hear from you and where have I been that you haven't ?

Whistler Sunday 17th 2006

Sunday the 17th and we have been home long enough to have a bite to eat, a chat around the dinner table and I'm almost ready to fall into bed. Helena and I went to Whistler today hoping to see a bit of snow, but we were out of luck once again. It has been raining most of the day and Jackie said we would probably get a bit of snow at Whistler. So Helena and I set off hopefully this morning. It was a lovely drive up there in spite of the rain. The views were good until we came home and the fog had set in then. It was quite cold at Whistler but it wasn't freezing at the top of the Ski Lift. I went to the ticket window while Helena parked the car and when I saw it was $47.00 CA each to ride to the top I thought I had better ask if there was snow up there. When the ticket seller said "No" I told her not to worry about the tickets then!!! I thought Whistler a lovely place but very commercial, everything was expensive. It must be a great fun place for young people when it snows though.
Yesterday Graham and Jackie took us back over the USA Border to a place called Point Roberts. It is just a little fishing marina with views of the Ocean. We could see the Ferries plying back and forth to Victoria Island, really lovely views. I'm starting to feel "All viewed out" I've seen so many lovely views !!
Helena is going to have to go home in a day or two, I shall miss her terribly, we have become firm friends during our travels. ( And Helena understands my Aussie humour). So just in case we go over to Victoria Island tomorrow I had better get to bed. No Pics tonight, there was only one taken today. Bye now

On our way to Vancouver

Out on the Columbian Glacier

Vancouver 15th Sept.2006

Here I am again and this time I am writing from Vancouver. We arrived here last night and after much searching found Jackie and Graham's house. We were made very welcome and after talking well into the night fell into bed and had a good nights sleep.
We had very good weather for most of our trip through the Rockies but rain set in last Wednesday between Golden and Revelstoke and we were glad to arrive at a town called Sicamous where we booked into a motel for the night, had a Chinese meal for dinner and went to bed. Left reasonably early the next morning and travelled on to Vancouver via Kamloops. I quite liked Kamloops, it is quite a big place and the gardens there were a picture. I've noticed that Dahlias seem to grow really beautifully over here, better than in Perth, and it seems the same applies in Vancouver, and they are quite cheap to buy.
We went out shopping this morning and Graham took us to an interesting Bakery called " Red Square". It is run by a Siberian and is all healthy food baked without preservatives. There were so many free tastes that I didn't need to eat any lunch !! There was even free coffee to go with all the tastings !! We could do with a shop like that in Perth, could'nt we ????
Sorry about the captions on the photos, I wrote next to the photos but the computer decided to do it's own thing. Hope you can work it all out.
Thanks Dave for your last comment on my blog.

The Canadian Rockies

Well where do I begin!! I have done and seen some things I thought I would never do or see in my life. There is no way I can describe the Rockies, they are just to beautiful and scenic and awe inspiring. They really have to be seen to be believed. One of my big disappointments is not seeing snow. I've seen plenty of ice on top of the mountains, but no snow !!There has been a long summer over here that's why there's a lack of it. Yesterday Helena and I went out on the Columbia Glacier in one of those big Ice buses and we were able to walk around on it for 15 mins. It was very icy and slippery but with Helena's help I managed not to fall !! The day before, we went up a great high mountain in a Gondola, what a wonderful experience that was !! I took photos and have had them put on a CD as well as having them printed off . I can't upload pics on Library computers, so rather than not take photos, I'll have them printed.
We stayed at a place called Golden last night but take my word for it when I say "Golden it Ain't ". It reminded me of that "MY Family" joke. To much inter-breeding. "My Dad's going to take me fishing when he gets out of prison in 53 years time".???????
Some of the Motels we've stayed in have been good, some not so good, one thing they do have in common though is............. they are all expensive!
The name of the town we are in now is called Revelstoke, and it's claim to fame is a big Dam,so we are going to take a look at that before we travel on. We are heading to Vancouver then, but will stop to have a look at anything we find interesting along the way. Have only got 9 mins. before I'm locked out of this computer, so will finish this for now. Thanks for comments received.

From Idaho

We are now at the Post Falls Library for me to update my blog.
Helena & I travelled East from Seattle going through The Cascade Ranges heading for Spokane. I saw my first mountain up close and personal., it was called MT. Si and it was magnificent !! Was'nt able to take a photo of it because it was just to hazy to big and to close plus we were on Highway 90 and really unable to stop. After we passed through the Cascades we came out onto the plains where farming is the main form of work. Potatoes, Apples,Pears and Corn seemed to grow pretty well. We travelled on until we came to a turn-off that told us Ritzville was only a short drive off the main Highway so we went and had a look-see. I loved it. Ritzville was a real "Hick" town and I laughed at the name.............'cause Ritzy it ain't !!! From there we travelled into Spokane where we spent the night at the Econo Lodge Motel. US$66.19 for 2 people. Clean and comfy. Had a good nights sleep, even slept in !! Now we're at a place called Post Falls in Idaho. Tonight we will be into British Columbia looking for somewhere to sleep. Banff, perhaps.
Will continue with this blog every chance I get, bye now.

Seattle Wednesday 6th Sept. 2006

Well we're tired and weary after spending two and a half hours out on the Argosy Locks Cruise today. It was a great trip and there were some lovely views. I didn't take a lot of photos because the views were just toooooo distant. It was interesting going through the Locks though, I don't think I have ever been through one before. I found the floating houses interesting. They are different to Boat Homes in as much as they don't have a motor. The bloke who was doing the commentary said that one sold recently and fetched $1.300.000. He pointed it out to us and I must say it was very nice. The weather was extremely kind to us, it was a beautiful day to be out on the water. Even the Salmon did their best to entertain us by leaping out of the water. Helena repaid their performance by eating one for lunch when we returned to shore !! I did the right thing and had a Shrimp Cocktail.
Some of the homes built on the sides of the mountains overlooking the water look very precarious. The commentator pointed out the places where there had been landslides and homes had tumbled into the Sound. He said the owners had tried to sue the Council but it had been deemed an Act of Nature, so they lost everything. Except for one owner whose home had caught fire on the way down. He claimed on Fire Insurance and was paid out !!
On the way home to Helena's in the car I was able to see Mt. Rainier reasonably clearly for the first time since I've been here. By gee it's a big mountainous volcano. It seems to loom over the city. There has been to much haze around to see it until today, so I have seen snow from a distance again!
Tomorrow morning we leave for the Rockies, (if we hadn't done the cruise we would have left today) I won't be sorry to leave Seattle and I'm looking forward to seeing the Rockies so much. We are going to go out through the Cascade Range on Interstate 90 and follow the Highway up through Washington, Idaho and then across the border into British Columbia where we will continue onto Banff in Alberta. From there we will continue to Jasper where we hope to see a Glacier. On our return we will go to Lake Louise then follow Trans Canada Highway 1 back through Kamloops to Vancouver where Jackie awaits us......we hope.
So if I don't get back to this blog for awhile, you'll know where I am. Hopefully I will be able to add to this at one of the hotels/ motels we will be staying in. Bye for now.

Seattle and Hood Canal

Seattle 3rd September 2006

Went to a 1st Birthday Party yesterday. Helena's Granddaughter turned 1. A little party was held in a holiday house that Helena and her two brothers-in-law own on Puget Sound. It was a lovely drive up there through Tacoma. We drove over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge which is a Suspension Bridge the same as the Golden Gate in SanFrancisco, only smaller. We continued on through beautiful tall Fir trees. Blackberry bushes laden with Blackberries everywhere. We went to a part of Puget Sound called Hood Canal. On the way we went into the Belfair Park Camping area, many people were taking advantage of the long week-end over here to camp there. There was every conceivable camping equipment you can imagine plus the big motor homes that people seem to have over here and they were all set up among the tall trees. It looked lovely, but to crowded for my liking.
There were about 13 people plus 5 children at the party. As it was a hot day a lot of them were in swimming. Normally there are Oysters aplenty growing just on the rocks at the waters edge but this year there has been a bad year because of the unseanonably hot weather and there are very few around plus there is something they call Red Algie which makes it very dicy to eat them at the moment. Normally the place is alive with Crabs too, but some whales came in ealier in the year herding seals and the seals ate the crabs, so no crabs this year either !The views were still there though............and they were something else !!
Coming home we drove home part of the way and then put the car on the Bremerton Ferry which took us into Seattle. From there we drove home the rest of the way. I thoroughly enjoyed it all, and by the time Helena and I fell into our beds it was 12.45am, so please excuse any mistakes I have made 'cause I'm still tired. We are going to have an easy day today.
Thanks for comments. Am Still having lots of problems with this computer. No photos yet, sorry!

Seattle 2nd September 2006

Had a big day out in Seattle today. Helena & I both slept in this morning so didn't get going until 11am, then we headed for the the City and the sights. What an eye-opener !! I realise now I am really only a girl from the "Sticks"!!
There were Cruise ships docked that were heading for Alaska that day so you can imagine the crowd that was around. The Port is very close to the city so the passengers didn't have far to walk. The Pike Place market was very close too so we had a look in there as well, but it was very hot and stuffy and I had soon had enough of it. You see one Market, you see them all!!!
There were lots of homeless people around, sleeping in the streets, on the lawns, on the bench seats, under bridges, in fact they were everywhere. Really opened my eyes ! And they have to throw their rubbish somewhere so it makes the city look very dirty. My first impression of Seattle was, big, crowded and dirty. And very hilly, more mountainous really ! !Very steep hills right in the city. Helena showed me Seattle by driving around, up and down streets as the will took her.Showed me the poor areas, the University area, the inner city wealthier area and Broadway where the "Gays" hang out.In all some very interesting sights. We also saw the Space Needle which is 184 meters high. It's very much like the one in Sydney. I tried to take a photo of it but parking was at a premium so I tried to do my best from the car. I took quite a lovely lot of photos, but could have trouble putting them on this blog because this computer of Helena's keeps freezing up. I'll see how it goes though.
The weather is sunny and warm.
By the way, how are the Eagles going with the football?

Seattle

Here I am in Seattle. What a day it has been !! First and foremost I didn't fall this time. I arrived safe and sound.
I felt sad saying goodbye to Gladys and Rick and if either of them read this (and I hope they will) "Thank You" once again for my lovely holiday in Solvang.
The flight left Santa Barbara 1 hour late due to fog, but we eventually got away with me being minus Moisturising Cream which I had carried from Perth in a jar.It had passed through every other security check except Santa Barbara !!
There was still quite a bit of fog around as we contiued on our way, but I was able to see the mountains and eventually see part of the Golden Gate Bridge as we flew into San Francisco.Luckily, I had a window seat so I was able to see how big San Francisco is. I was getting concerned about catching my connecting flight, but apparently the fog had made a lot of flights late and the flight to Seattle was held back. There were no falls as the man with the wheel-chair met me at the bottom of the steps and all care was taken. And wasn't I glad he wheeled me to the Seattle gate,it seemed an endless journey. I would have missed the connecting flight if I had had to find my own way. As it was, I waited about 15mins to board the flight and I was away again !! What wonderful views I had!! Once again I had a window seat and was able to see snow on top of some of the mountains.Mount St. Helens being one of them. We passed over many small commmunities, lakes, rivers and Farms and then Puget Sound came into view. I was surprised how large it is and so beautiful !!!! There was so much to see from the air that I hardly noticed the time slip by on the plane. When we arrived at the Seattle Airport Helena had told me to follow the other passengers to the Baggage Pick Up area where she would meet me. This I did and was surprised when we boarded an underground railway !! I felt a little apprehensive, but looked around at the other people and thought, "Yes, these are the people from my flight", so just kept following. Can you imagine how relieved and happy I was to see Helena when I got off the train and went up the esculator and there she stood. Oh happy days !!??? So now here I am, sitting at her computer. We have talked ourself hoarse !! And tomorrow the "Sight-seeing " starts for me.
Sorry there are no photos with this blog tonight, perhaps next blog.

Last Day in Solvang

It's arrived, my last day in Solvang. I will be so sad to say goodbye to these lovely people, they have made me so welcome in their lovely home, but Helena awaits me in Seattle, so must away!
Yesterday we went back to the Casino, I had seen a little trinket I wanted to buy for Gladys, but they had told me before we went the previous day that there were some strange looking people there and to keep my hand on my money. So I didn't take my credit card with me !!Yesterday I went back with my credit card !! One thing that is different at the Chumash Casino to the Burswood is that the Valet Parking is free and while one is waiting for the car to be brought up there are free bottles of water on ice if you want a drink .There are also free buses running all the time to take you to Santa Barbara or where ever you come from around here. Pity Burswood don't offer a bit of service like that.
Must away to pack my gear, as usual, everything is left to the last minute. I will be leaving here around 6am. The plane doesn't leave until 8.15am, but if there is a heavy fog, as there was this morning, it will be slow going down the mountains.
Bye now, next posting from Seattle !!
